What are braces and how do they work?

Braces are small brackets bonded to the outer surface of each tooth and joined by an archwire. That wire is what transmits the force that moves the teeth. It is the system that can correct practically any malocclusion.

The archwire changes over the course of treatment to apply different movements. Before we start, at our clinic in Ibi we plan every movement before bonding the first bracket, so we know where each tooth has to end up before we start moving it.

They work on their own, all day

They are fixed to your teeth, so they do not depend on you remembering to put them in. The force is constant.

They handle complex cases

They allow difficult movements to be controlled with great precision, such as uprighting roots or closing open bites.

There are discreet options too

Ceramic or sapphire brackets blend in against the tooth, and lingual braces go on the inside and cannot be seen.

Who are braces for?

Braces resolve practically any malocclusion, and they are the most predictable option in complex cases. For adults and teenagers alike. At the first visit we study your mouth and tell you honestly whether this is the best option for you, or whether your case is better treated with another system.

Crowding and severely rotated teeth

When teeth overlap one another or are badly rotated, braces offer the finest control to reposition them one by one.

Bites that need thorough correction

Deep overbites, open bites or crossbites: braces allow elastics and other resources to be combined to correct the relationship between the arches.

Teenagers and longer treatments

During growth we can take advantage of changes that are no longer available later on. Because they are fixed, they do not depend on the patient’s day-to-day cooperation.

If you know you would not be consistent

With a removable appliance the result depends on wearing it for the hours indicated. If that worries you, a fixed system takes that pressure off you.

I am Dr Santiago Espuelas, co-director of Clínica Dental Hernández & Espuelas and an orthodontic specialist from the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid, where I completed the Master’s in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics. I have taken part in international congresses of the European Orthodontic Society. Step by step through treatment with braces

We take you through the process from start to finish so that you arrive at your first appointment without a single doubt.

We examine your mouth, assess whether braces are the best option for your case and answer all your questions. With no obligation.

Study and digital planning

With the intraoral scanner we digitise your mouth without uncomfortable impressions and design the movement of your teeth. From that we plan the final position of each tooth and the sequence of archwires.

Fitting the brackets

We bond the brackets one by one and fit the first archwire. The appointment takes a little longer than usual and does not hurt. Before you leave we explain how to brush with them and which foods are best avoided.

Check-ups and adjustments

We check that everything is progressing as planned. At each visit we change or adjust the archwire to apply the planned movements. Dr Espuelas sees you personally.

Removal and retention

If needed, we fine-tune the last details. When we finish we fit a retainer so that your new smile stays stable in the long term. Work done well lasts a lifetime.
